Got Ethics?

Who cares about ethics in business? Your customers do. Alot. Statistics have shown that purchasing decisions increasingly are made at least partially on the basis of values-based issues. If a customer has a choice to buy something from a company that is known to exploit vulnerable workers or one who treats their employees, suppliers, etc. with respect and dignity, it’s a no-brainer. Operating with integrity affects your bottom line and it’s the right thing to do.

Increasingly, corporations are coming on board to the notion that being in business is no longer just about making money. It’s about creating value for your customers, stakeholders and communicating that value in an authentic way. Consumers are substantially more savvy and discerning than they ever were and are increasingly demanding that the companies they chose to do business with are in it for more than just the money.

Sustainable businesses today are equally focused on the triad of profits, people and planet. 1. Ensure that none of your businesses practices are harming the environment and make whatever steps you can to enhance it; 2. treat all people in your path with respect and dignity – including employees, customers, investors, and other stakeholders; and – of course – 3. make a decent profit along the way. In order for this model to work the leaders within the company need to be imbued with an innate sense of integrity, that makes it second nature to pursue these pillars of sustainability. This should be a priority when considering appointments to top positions.

If your company isn’t having the success you hope for, perhaps consider reviewing this aspect of your business. Your bottom line, and the world, could be better for it.
